Walter Sobie joined the Bender Group in 2005
as a Realtor. Mr. Sobie began his career in Microwave Electronics for the Military markets 35 years ago.
Mr. Sobie has held senior marketing and sales
positions in defense micro-electronics for companies such as RCA Corporation, MACOM, Raytheon Company,
Loral Corporation, and Lockheed Martin Corporation. Mr. Sobie started a marketing consulting business in 1980
helping many small and medium companies perform strategic planning and business growth. Mr. Sobie is on the
Board of Directors of GenVac Aerospace a Cleveland, Ohio based company.
Walter came to Virginia in 1995 as President of
Commonwealth Scientific Corporation that produced thin film process equipment for the Data Storage, specialty
semiconductor, opthalmics, precision optics, DOD, and Bio Medical Industries. With Mr. Sobie’s help, the company
grew to $107M in 1997. Mr. Sobie orchestrated the sale of Commonwealth Scientific Corporation to Veeco
Instruments in Plainview New York. After the successful transisition of Commonwealth into that of Veeco Instruments,
Mr. Sobie was given the position of Vice President and General Manager of the Ion Source and Process Equipment
Business. In 2002, Mr. Sobie left to start a new components company to compete with Veeco Instruments.
Mr. Sobie has grown the new company called Vacutron
Technologies to $5M in 2005 and has allowed the key employees to purchase the company so that they can direct their
skills and energy for the bio-medical industry. Mr. Sobie has now entered the exciting real estate market to help with the
future growth and prosperity of the Bender Group of Long and Foster Realtors.
Mr. Sobie has over 30 years of marketing and sales
experience in the commercial, military, microwave electronics and opto – electronic markets. In his marketing and sales
career, Mr. Sobie assisted in the sale commercial properties from his association with many key companies.
Walter received his BS in Electrical Engineering in 1968
and MS Electrical Engineering in 1970. In 1978, Mr. Sobie received an MBA in Marketing from Northeastern University
and completed the Executive Management Programs at Harvard University in 1979 and Sloan School of Business in
1980.
